SAR Member Eligibility

The applicant must be a citizen of good repute in the community and the lineal descendant of an ancestor who was at all times unfailing in loyalty to the cause of American independence. The patriot ancestor must have rendered acceptable service by overt acts of resistance to the authority of Great Britain. The patriot’s service and line of descent must be documented through acceptable references.

Researching Your Patriot Ancestor

The first step toward joining the SAR is finding and identifying your patriot ancestor. Most members would refer you to the resources listed below to give you a good foothold for your journey toward membership. Remember that the SAR is here to help you should you need it along the way. Consult your local chapter’s registrar should you encounter any missing links in your family’s history.

Although SAR members will assist prospective members in gathering the necessary documentation to prove lineage and service of the patriot ancestor, we generally do not do in-depth research for prospective members. Once a prospective member has identified a patriot ancestor and has gathered the basic documentation necessary to prove lineage and service of the patriot, the prospective member should contact a local SAR Chapter Registrar or contact the ALSSAR State Registrar for further assistance.
